“Former Iowa wrestler Brent Metcalf scored a second-round technical fall to beat Bubba Jenkins 2-0, 6-0 in the 66-kilogram freestyle match at the Beat the Streets Gala on Thursday aboard the USS Intrepid in New York City. Metcalf, a two-time national champ, met former Penn State star Jenkins four times in college. Metcalf won all four matches.”
Well, this is actually the 3rd rematch, but hey, who is counting. This one should be good. They will be wrestling freestyle, which makes it even more exciting. Caldwell is coming back from shoulder surgery, that put him out for the 2009-2010 season. Hopefully he is fully healed. If not, I doubt this will be much of a match.
Metcalf vs Caldwell will be the main event of a seven match line-up, including names like Palmer, Herbert, Askren, and many more. Oh yeah, and Royce Alger will be providing entertainment. That will be interesting.

University of Minnesota freshman wrestler and former Olympian, Jake Deitchler has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA for the 2009-10 academic year. He will lose a year of eligibility.
The story on Intermat quotes J Robinson discussing a similar situation where the student athlete received MORE money, and was only suspended for 2-weeks and made to pay back that money. I am not sure why the NCAA has given Deitchler such a harsh punishment. It seems a little unfair.

We all know about Gable’s loss to Owings in 1970, but take a look at his 1969 tournament, which was held at Brigham Young, and his 1968 tournament, in which he beat the NCAA champ from the year before, Dan McGuire. McGuire went on to win his 2nd title the next year by fall.

The 47th Midlands Championships will start today at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. If you have never been to a Midlands, you should plan on making the tournament next year. It is an incredible show with a ton of great competition.
The Midlands is “Where the Elite Meet to Compete.” There have been a ton of Olympic team members and champions wrestle in this tournament, including Dan Gable, Cael Sanderson, Cary Kolat (who competed while in high school), the Brands. This year, it is rumored that Jake Deitchler will make his first appearance of the season (he has been out with an injury).
Tennessee will be represented by the entire UTC team, and also Nick Marable from University of Missouri. Marable has been on a tear this season and is seeded 4th in the tournament at 165. Jake Young, from UTC, is seeded 9th at 174. He has been having a great season so far, with only 2 losses. One of those was apparently a 2-point loss to last years NCAA runner up Mike Miller of Central Michigan.
I am heading up there tomorrow to catch the semifinals and the finals. Here is the official Midlands Championship site, which includes schedule, seeding, and results.
From Intermat University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling coach Heath Eslinger announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Chattanooga’s next incoming class will include three state champions and two wrestlers who finished in the top four at the 2009 Super 32.

The New York Times has written an article about Cael Sanderson and his new coaching job at Penn State. It describes a little about why he made the descision and what he hopes to do there.
Former Tennessee Wrestler Nick Marable, from Christian Brothers High School and now Missouri University, was quoted in a recent Missouri wrestling article from the Missourian. The article describes how these college wrestlers are preparing for the upcoming season. Wheelbarrow races, buddy carries, and stadium runs are just a few of the grueling exercises these guys are putting themselves through.
“This stuff is just so different from any other sport,” two-time All American senior Nick Marable said. “It’s so much more disciplined, so much more work. I’ve gotten a lot of talk from football players about how they respect us so much for how hard we work.”
