Maurice Patton of the Tennessean has written a preview of the 2009-10 high school wrestling season for middle Tennessee. He talks a little about the State tournament being moved to the Williamson County Agricultural center, gives a preseason list of the top wrestlers, and some predictions.
Patton also discusses the changes to the Girls tournament eligibility. If you have not heard, TSSAA has created a new rule that will only allow girls to compete in the Girls State tournament if they have not wrestled any boys during the regular season. Coach Bray, whose Tullahoma team has Emily Gessler competing in the lineup, has been quoted in the article:
“The whole purpose is to try to build the sport, but you’re punishing the best girl in the state,” Bray said of his sophomore, Emily Gessler. “She’s pioneering girls wrestling here. If she goes through the girls’ season and doesn’t see competition, that’s hurting her future.”
Others have seen this as a way to grow the girls sport in the state of Tennessee, as been shown in states such as Texas and California.
